Now, it is an expected competency. Yet the example of the former glory of our default desktop word processing software should remind minority professionals that career trajectories stem from an ability to spot a new niche and build a skill set within it. This message is not being broadly communicated in the U.S. corporate markets. Heavily invested in legacy systems and established traditions, the current large corporate leaders have a vested interest in maintaining a staff that can deliver on the status quo, no matter what they say publicly about supporting innovation. Unfortunately, treading water isn’t anyone’s dream career path. For a dynamic future, workers would be better served by learning from their international counterparts who continually make plays in emerging trends or narrowly focused niches.
